Shaughnessy
Shaughnessy History
In 1885, Vancouver’s provincial government gave the Canadian Pacific Railway 6000 acres of land that was located in the heart of the city. Known today as the area of Shaughnessy, this community grew into a prestigious residential area. The neighbourhood was intended to lure the elite group of the city away from the West End.
By 1915 nearly 243 new homes had been built and 80% of those homeowners were part of Vancouver’s social register.
The provincial government refused Shaughnessy’s hope of becoming a municipality that was separate from Point Grey. Thus the Shaughnessy Settlement Act of 1914 was created. It restricted the development of the community to singly family houses.
Following the Shaughnessy Settlement Act was the Shaughnessy Heights Building Restriction Act that was passed in 1922. It prohibited the sub-division of lots and limits the construction amount allowed to one single family home per lot.
As the 1930’s brought the depression, most of Shaughnessy’s residents moved to other parts of the city and despite the provincial restrictions and acts, many of the single-family homes were replaced with rooming houses or multiple conversion dwellings.
